2 degree temperature swing on Nest thermostats is just too much

This question comes up periodically and always seems to get closed but I'm going to try again.

The temperature swing on the Nest thermostat is set to 1 degF. That means that if I set a temperature of 68 deg, it will allow the temperature to reach 67 deg before turning on the heat and will then run until the temperature reaches 69 deg - a 2 degree swing. This is enough of a swing to be very uncomfortable while resting.

It's actually even worse with a hot water heating system where the temperature will then rise even more as the radiators cool. There is also a lag as the radiators heat up again. The temperature swing is probably close to 5 deg.

I'm also seeing many users asking for larger swings for heat pump systems.

I'm actually thinking of switching back to my old Filtrete thermostat which I could set to swings of 0.5 degF. That, or an Ecobee which seems to be far more flexible overall.

Why not make this configurable? Even if you have to hide it behind an "expert mode"?

Hi dbrand666,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum. The swing of approximately 1 degree Fahrenheit is designed to optimize energy efficiency and comfort based on their algorithms and temperature control algorithms. Nest aims to provide a user-friendly and simplified experience, which is why they may not offer an option to adjust the temperature swing directly through the thermostat's settings. Learn more about this here on What you'll see on a Nest Thermostat article.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Best,

Zoe

I notice you qualified the answer with "directly through the thermostat's settings", which implies there might be an advanced menu or API somewhere that would let me change this setting. Can you tell me where to find that or point me in the general direction of where I might find that info?

Hi there,

I'm sorry for any confusion caused. When I mentioned "directly through the thermostat's settings," I was referring to the standard user interface and menus accessible on the thermostat itself or through the accompanying mobile app or online dashboard provided by the manufacturer, but we don't have any to share about the advanced menu or API that would let you change a setting on the thermostat. Please be assured that our product team is working non-stop with different partners to bring the best features to our Google Nest devices. So, please let our product team know about it by sending feedback

Thanks,

Zoe
