AC is short cycling - how to set min run/ rest times

MrSprocket

Hi.  I’m new to Nest thermostats and have noticed that my AC system is short cycling( stops for about 10 seconds and then restarts).  I have 1 Nest learning upstairs and 1 down .  They control the same system and I suspect that when #1 shuts down then #2 starts it back up.  Will the system learn to set a minimum rest time of at least 5 minutes?  How do i manually program it?

Hi there!

Thanks for reaching out to our community space. I apologize for the inconvenience caused by your Nest thermostat's (issue).

To assist you with the best solution, I would like to get a bit more information:

  • Can you tell me more about how often this is happening? Is it random, or does it seem to follow a specific pattern?

  • Are there any error messages? If so, what are they exactly?
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Has there been any recent changes or upgrades to your HVAC system?
  • Do you have a common ground wire or C wire?
  • Does the issue happen on heating only, cooling only, or both?

By understanding these details, we can better diagnose the issue and find a solution.

Best,

Brandon.

It happens when it is hot and the system is running a lot.  No error messages.  Maintence was just preformed due to short cycling issue.  The contractor was replaced.  Yes I have a C wire; it is connected.  I just installed Nest and the system is now short cycling.  Old thermostats were Amazon.

Hi, @MrSprocket,

Thank you so much for your response. I really appreciate all the details provided. It's frustrating to deal with a thermostat that's constantly cycling on and off. I understand how disruptive that can be. I’m happy to assist you!

To effectively troubleshoot your thermostat, I'll need the following information:

  • A picture of your current wiring configuration
  • A picture of your previous wiring configuration

Also, I'd like to know:

  • Do you have a conventional system or heat pump system?

In the meantime, I recommend:

  • Check that the thermostat wires are completely inserted into the terminals.
  • Make sure the thermostat has the auto-schedule turned off.
    • Go to SettingsNest SenseAuto-ScheduleOff.
  • Disabling the thermostat from switching automatically:
    • Open the Nest app > tap Settings > Home/Away Assist > Home or Away. Then select the thermostat > switch off automatic switching.

To rule out an HVAC system problem, please follow these steps:

  • Turn off the HVAC system's power at the breaker switch.
  • Wait a few minutes, then turn the power back on.
  • If the problem reappears after a short time, please let me know.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have along the way.

Best regards,

Ana
