Add phone for home/away without full access?

We just got a nest learning thermostat and want the home/away feature to trigger from our phones, and our kids phones. Is there a way to use the kids phones without giving them full access in Google home? They get home from school hours before us, and we don't want the nest still in eco mode.

No unfortunately. Assuming you're using a Google account to access and control your devices (not a legacy Nest account), for this to work, you would need to share your home with them in the Home app, so their phones can participate in the Home & Away Routines feature. Those you share your home with in the Home app get the same level of access and control of all devices and services as you as the owner. 

If you're not using a Google account, and still have a non-migrated Nest account, even with the older Home/Away Assist feature in the Nest app, you would've needed to assign "full access" for their phones to help with home/away assist.
