Aux heat & heat pump Questions

SterlingMark

I've been unable to have my Aux heat assist heat pump as needed

So while the heat pump is heating - use the Aux heating element in the furnace to arrive at my set temp (70)

      Thanks -Mark

PS - this heat pump is an Amana and furnace is typical ( just upgraded heating element 60A fuse now )  didn't  help.  Either or ----not able to have Heat pump with Aux power on ( not an option )  at same time

Hello SterlingMark,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. I'd be happy to take a look into this for you.

Could you please tell us the Nest Thermostat model you have? Also, have you tried adjusting the Heat pump Balance settings? For homes with a heat pump and auxiliary heat, you will find this option in addition to Early-On. When this is enabled, your thermostat automatically preheats your home so it will reach your scheduled temperature on time.

Please let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Mark

Hi and thank you-

It's a Gen3 Learning Thermostat

yes I have (adjusted Heat pump Balance as well as Early-on with no luck.

Basically the system blew out 62 degree air at the vents and we used space heaters along with fireplace to keep house up from 62 degree's.  It would never engage Aux heat when the Heat pump is on.

Believe I did see one time (perhaps a defrost cycle, when HeatPump was off, Aux heat kicked in for the brief time the unit defrosted (not long enough) then turned off Aux heat.

When I removed the old thermostat, it had a couple of posts jumped   I saved the paperwork

if you'd like to see it.

Update - Just as a test, I've replaced the NEST with the old Thermostat.  Happy to report that this old thermostat unit is able to run the heat pump while using AUX heat ( ... not one or the other !)    We easily heat the house now to our preferred temperature.  The house has been extremely cold over the years.

The posts that were jumped together were R RC (which is 24 Vac power from heating transformer & 24 Vac power from cooling transformer)    The other Thermostat shows it as the most common connection method when using Heat Pump with forced air and AUX heat (in the furnace).

Furnace side is 1.5T & typical connections, with the W1/W2 posts are jumped.

Earlier in an attempt to boost the heat from 64 degrees max out of heat pump, the recommendation was made to remove the old heating element in favor of larger one (better suited for our hourse).  This required a sub-pannel install ($$) and 60A circuit to the heating element.    Sadly, after install, our NEST wasn't able to utilize the AUX heat while heat pump was active?  The AC tech left after installing the larger Heating Element in the Furnace saying " IT should be working, when we set it to anything above 78 degrees, AUX heat should kick-in and you'll feel it in the air from the vents ... it will be warm.

All for this update, I'm about to take the nest to beach house.  That house only deals with Cooling in the Summer.

Truthfully, I expected more of a response from Google Support with regards to this obvious issue with my config and NEST Gen3.    Unless I have a wiring issue or misconfiguration somehow, I can say it's caused issues for me not being able to heat the house.   My time spent on this issue has been enormous at this point.

Hello Mark,

I'm sorry for the late reply, and I know it has been a while, but I'd love to know more about this.

Could you please share with us a photo of your thermostat's wiring?

I'll look forward to your response.

Thanks,

Mark
