Big disappointment in the "Learning" thermostat

David_FPUU

I just purchased two Nest Learning thermostats.  After installing the first one, I spent an hour or so trying to understand the learning features, especially as Early On and how the thermostat can start the furnace earlier or later, depending upon the outside temperature data it receives from the web.

What disappointed me is that this feature only works if someone is not only home, but detected by the system as being home.  This is stupid!  What I want is for the thermostat to turn on the heat so that it is at the desired temperature when we arrive.  What is the point of having the ability to calculate the preheat time, if you have to walk into a cold house when you arrive?  Stupid.

So I will have to do what I have always done, which is to guess how long it will take to heat up, depending on my experience, maybe adjusted as the winter goes along.  This will either waste energy by starting too soon on a mild day, or fail to have the room comfortable when I arrive.  Either way, this is a failure to take advantage of all the technology in these devices.

I won't return the Nest devices, because (SFAIK) they are the only Wi-Fi thermostats that do not need a "C" wire and that I can use with our old, simple 2-wire furnace wiring.  And I can still start the furnace remotely, so that is an advantage.

But the term "Learning Thermostat" simply does not apply, I guess, unless there are always people at home (and detected).

Hello David_FPUU,

I'm sorry for the trouble this may have caused you. I'm sure it's confusing being a first-time user, but I'd love to help.

I understand that your thermostat should automatically calculate when to turn on heating or cooling so your home will reach a scheduled temperature on time. With this, you need to create a schedule temperature for it to activate, as it depends on your desired temperature and not the temperature outside. For more information, please check out this article and let me know if you have more questions

Mark

Mark, Thank you for your reply.  But I do not think you understood my comment.  The instructions in the article you linked specifically state that Early-On "will not work if everyone is away." (By extension, it also will not work if someone is home but is not detected.)  This is undesirable and is unacceptable in my situation.  I specifically want the thermostat to start to heat up the room before anyone arrives, so that it will be comfortable when people get there!  What use is it to wait until people return home?  That is not serving their needs.

What is curious to me is that, even though I turned off "Home/Away Assist" for this thermostat, looking at the first week of history data in the app, i see instances of where the thermostat overrode the schedule I built and either turned on the heat early or turned it down early.  Why is it continuing to do that even though Home/Away Assist is off?

And as an added comment, if I set a lower temperature in the schedule at some point, that should not mean that I want the room to be colder at that time -- it would mean that I simply do not want the furnace to run after that time.  It looks as if now I have to place a temp setting at the end of the scheduled "warm room" time, with the temp we want, and then set a cooler temp at a later time, which we have to guess.  That is different from how our previous two Nest thermostats work.  It would possibly make sense to act that way for air conditioning, because you want the room to cool down for comfort.  But it does make sense to stop heating a room that is in use.  I definitely am disappointed.  I hope I can return the two new Nest thermostats I purchased -- they are not working as we need them to.  I hope I have explained myself clearly so that you understand.

Sorry, I made a typing error.  The sentence near the end that says, "But it does make sense..." should say, "But it does NOT make sense to stop heating a room..."etc.  Sorry for any confusion.
