I have just spent the past 45 minutes chatting with support about this issue and it was not resolved.
I just bought and moved into a house. Part of what drew me to the house is that it had many smart appliances and features. The thermostat was even a nest thermostat, which I thought was great because I already have multiple products within the Google and Nest ecosystems. I paired my phone with the thermostat device shortly after I took ownership of the house on May 31st.
I got a banner warning today that I would no longer be able to use the app for my thermostat after a period of time but that I should be receiving a promotional code so that I could upgrade at a discount. I did not receive the promotional code, so I spoke to support. And when I spoke to support, they indicated that I had to have linked my account to the device no later than April 25. Before I owned the house. Even though the app control will expire while I own the house, and I am the one who needs to replace it, I do not get the benefit of the code. How does that make sense?
So to recap, if I want a smart thermostat, which I do, I need to upgrade this product. I currently have zero incentive whatsoever to remain in the Google nest ecosystem because I am told that I am not eligible for the upgrade discount code.
So... With this in mind, any recommendations for a great smart thermostat outside of the Google ecosystem? I am a heavy user of Google products, but this has left such a bad taste in my mouth that I feel I should vote with my dollar and not support this type of behavior by no longer supporting Google products.
The products were advertised with one set of features and now those features are being removed. It is straight up deceptive and the lack of power they give to their customer service representatives is appalling.

I'm very upset that they are discontinuing the app also when the app and thermostat seem to work just fine... seems like a shady practice to sell new thermostats. I'll go with Amazon if I decide to replace mine, I have the blink cameras and they work well.

Good luck. I closed on my house May 31 with a nest 2nd gen learning thermostat. I have now been told by support that I am not eligible for the promo code because it had to be connected to my email by April 25. So even though I am the one who needs to replace the item the company has decided to all but brick, I do not get the benefit of even the discount. Even their senior support was unable to help. It's absolutely absurd.
So what is my incentive to stay with Nest products, exactly?
