Can't set-up new thermostat in the Google Home app:

I just got a new Google Nest Learning Thermostat and, no matter what I try, I hit two bugs when adding the thermostat to my Google Home app.

If I scan the QR code on the back of the thermostat from the Google Home app, I get the error "Unable to start device pairing. Configuration not available".

If I follow the alternative process I land on a screen that says "Choose the last four characters of your device's serial number", which I cannot do because there's no input field nor keyboard shown.

What should I do? Thank you for your help.

The Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E get installed in the Google Nest app. Once installed there, they should automatically appear in the Google Home app.  The Nest Thermostat, in contrast, gets installed in the Google Home app and does NOT appear in the Google Nest app.

Thank you, this worked.

(But unbelievably bad user experience from Google.)

If you're having trouble setting up a new thermostat in the Google Home app, there are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the problem:

  1. Make sure your thermostat is compatible with the Google Home app. Check the Google Home app's list of compatible devices to see if your thermostat is on the list.

  2. Check that your thermostat is properly connected to your home's Wi-Fi network. Make sure the Wi-Fi signal is strong and that you've entered the correct password.

  3. Make sure your thermostat is powered on and functioning properly. Check the manufacturer's instructions for any troubleshooting steps you can take.

  4. Ensure that your Google Home app is up to date. If not, update it from the app store.

  5. Restart both your thermostat and your Wi-Fi router to ensure that they are both functioning properly.

  6. Try resetting your thermostat to its factory settings and then set it up again in the Google Home app.

  7. If none of these steps work, contact the manufacturer's customer support for further assistance. They may be able to provide additional troubleshooting steps or recommend a replacement if necessary.

Please don't provide incorrect answers.

The Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd Gen, can only be configured using the Nest app.
