Disable "Fan Schedule" when away?

pmarks
Community Member

I'm a fan of Nest's "Fan Schedule" feature, because it filters air and equalizes temperatures in my home, while using relatively little power.  I actually cut open my walls and pulled new thermostat wiring just to make this work.

However, the fan still consumes ~400 watts, so I would like it to turn off when I'm away.  Currently, when Nest switches to Away/Eco mode, the fan continues running.

Is there any way to automatically disable Fan Schedule when I'm away from home, or are there any plans to fix this limitation?

I'm concerned that "Fan Schedule" doesn't appear anywhere in the new Google Home app.  To change the settings, I either have to use the thermostat itself, or the legacy Nest app.

Hi pmarks,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community.

Forced-air systems run the fan whenever they’re heating or cooling. If your forced air system has a separate fan wire in your Nest thermostat’s G connector, you can run the system fan when it’s not heating or cooling. If not, your fan will only run automatically when your system is heating or cooling.

Also, fan controls differ slightly depending on which thermostat you have

Check out this link for more details on how to manage your fan with your Nest thermostat.

I hope it helps.

hi. i've got a Nest thermostat and use the Google Home app (IOS) to manage it.  am trying to set fan schedule by day. clicking "this link" brings me to below...here is my question...#5 indicates i should be able to set fan schedule by day if i set "run every day" to off, however i do not see any option to set fan schedule by day. thanks.

Set a daily fan schedule

  1. Open the Google Home app allenm_0-1653675442318.png

    .
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings allenm_1-1653675442337.png

    .
  4. Select Schedules allenm_2-1653675442328.png

     Fan.
  5.  Switch Run every day on if you want to set the same fan schedule for all days. Set it to off if you want a unique schedule for a particular day.
  6. Choose a start and end time with From and To.
  7. Set how long you’d like to run your fan per hour. You can choose 15, 30, 45 minutes of run time, or select 60 minutes to run your fan for the whole hour.

Your fan will turn on automatically each day for the time and duration you’ve selected. You can always edit or disable your schedule at any time from the fan menu.

Hey allenm,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Google Nest Community.

I'd like to jump in here and check how your Nest Thermostat is doing. When you go to the Google Home app and select your thermostat, does it give you the menu or option to change the schedule?

Best regards,

Ryan

On my Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen, there is no option to schedule the fan (or anything else) in my Google Home app.  It looks like someone started porting features from the Nest app, and gave up.

The closest thing is "Fan: run fan for [15 minutes .. 12 hours]", but that's one shot, not a schedule.

Hey pmarks,

Thanks for your reply.

The fan schedule options are only 15, 30, 45 minutes of run time, or select 60 minutes to run your fan for the whole hour.

Check out this link for more information on how to control and manage your fan using the Nest Thermostat.

Hey pmarks,

Thanks for the reply and for including the photo.

Could you share a photo of your current wiring configurations on your Nest Thermostat?

I hope to hear from you very soon.

I'm not sure why it matters, because the thermostat itself works fine, but here's the wiring configuration: https://imgur.com/a/inNFMb7

Hey pmarks,

Thanks for the reply and for sharing the photo of your current wiring configurations.

As you described from your previous responses, it looks like the fan settings is not showing when you go to the Google Home app. I'd like to know if you've tried to log out and re-login and check if all the settings show up.

Let me know how it goes by replying to this thread.

I've switched to an entirely different phone, and the Google Home fan settings are unchanged.

Hi pmarks,

Thanks for the reply.

It looks like this is the only option available for your Google Home app depending on your wiring configurations.

Well, none of the issues I raised have been resolved.

Other than that, I don't need help.

I have a Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen, with a dedicated fan wire.

The documentation says nothing about linking the fan schedule to my home/away status.  How can I file this as a feature request?
