Does Nest Thermostat have a HVAC delay feature to protect compressor from quick on/off cycles?

I don't see any mention of an HVAC (compressor) protection feature.  My previous thermostats (Sensi and Honeywell) added a 5 minute delay during cooling cycles to protect the HVAC compressor from cycling on / off too quickly.    Does the Nest Thermostat provide this protective feature??

Hi GCPath0755,

Thank you for reaching out and we're sorry for the delay.

Many heating and cooling systems have a built-in delay to prevent excessive wear. Since there are moving parts, turning your system on and off frequently may shorten its lifespan.

Nest thermostats also have a built-in delay, like many other thermostats. This is to help save energy and also prevent system wear, especially for systems that don’t automatically delay turning on. This delay is commonly called the maintenance band, deadband, differential, or temperature swing

Best regards,

Ryan

Thanks for your response Ryan.

Is the Nest Thermostat Built-in Delay (i.e. - maintenance band, deadband, differential, or temperature swing) already configured by default?

I ask because I notice during colder days the heating cycles can be very short at times.  After the room reaches the temp, the flame goes out, the fan runs for another 90 or 120 seconds and as soon as the fan stops, the heat cycle starts with very little delay, all over again (inducer motor runs for 30 seconds or so, the flame kicks on then blower motor comes on).

I'm hoping the delay you speak of is longer during cooling cycles so the HVAC compressor gets a little breather between cycles.  I installed the Nest Thermostat on my Carrier system in Oct/November, so I have not experienced a cooling season yet.

Thanks - Gary C.

Hey GCPath0755,

Thanks for the reply.

I am certain that the maintenance band on your Nest Thermostat is enough to keep your HVAC system on a safe and good running condition in addition to your HVAC system's own delay system.

Best regards,

Ryan
