Ending support for Nest Cam 1st and 2nd gen thermostats

Ending support for the 1st and 2nd gen Nest thermostats is nothing but a brazen, gun to the head, cash grab. There is literally nothing wrong with these thermostats as evidenced by the fact they didn’t even try to come up with a reason in the notice other than they’re old. Making me replace something that has never had a single issue with it is customer service malpractice.

That’s fine. Lose my business. Google isn’t Canadian, so there’s no way they’re getting another purchase out of me.

Agreed, this is ridiculous!!! Did it really costs so much money to let it be connected to the app?!!!

or at least give us other ways to control it remotely (for example via home assistant)

That’s what infuriates me the most. Ending the ability to use it any other way than manually, is classless and absolutely unnecessary.

So furious about this!

I’m totally fine with this, I just switched out my Nest doorbell and my nest wireless camera for ones by UniFi, once I get a new thermostat I’ll be completely away from Google devices in the house. Google has officially killed nest.

Good choice.  My home network is built on UniFi equipment.  Now is a good reason to swap out Nest/Google devices for UniFi Protect and Access devices.  Please post whatever Thermostat device you find that integrates well with Ubiquiti.  I need 6 of them to control multiple hydronic zones that will soon be "dumb".

UniFi doesn’t have a thermostat yet, I’ve heard they have one in the pipeline though. I’m going to hold off a few months and see if it comes out or not. If not, ecobee is my plan.

100% agree. This is outrageous of google. The remote app facility is the only reason I bought the ruddy thing!  can’t believe they are dropping it so soon. I vow to never ever buy another google related product as long as I shall live and I have recommended others to buy nest thermostats too! I wish I hadn’t now. I hope a class action is formed against google on this. Utterly appalling way to treat loyal customers of such an expensive product. Peter.

Hi Everybody,

Thank you for posting in the community! I appreciate the opportunity to address your comments regarding the ending support for the Nest Learning Thermostats (1st and 2nd gen only).

I understand that changes of this nature may be upsetting; however, take into account that it's been nearly a decade and a half since these thermostats first hit the shelves. Because we deeply value our users' home comfort and needs, it's become progressively more difficult to provide updates for these older models due to their original hardware limitations.

Additional information regarding compensation offers is provided in the help article Upcoming end of support for Nest Learning Thermostats (1st and 2nd gen ).

Feel free to share any additional questions; I'll be glad to provide information.

Regards,

Humberto

What exactly do you feel you need to do to update the thermostat experience? Everything with these devices runs flawlessly and it's one of the most basic operational pieces of equipment. There have never been software updates done with any regularity because there's been no need to. These things run on their own. As your team pointed out, these thermostats will continue to run just fine. However, you've forced change on all of us by removing them from the Nest and Google Home apps without any justifiable reasons offered other than they're old. Just because a piece of equipment is old doesn't make it irrelevant. You should be proud of the longevity of these devices rather than annoyed by it. Forcing people to spend money in these cash strapped economic times is about as tone deaf as it gets. Your lack of customer care on this is astonishingly bad. This is a cash grab, plain and simple.
