Every night temperature is dropping to 62 degrees and then heat kicking on...not sure why

We have the Nest Learning Thermostat 2nd Generation.  Many nights our air conditioning is dropping the house to 62 degrees and then the heat kicks on for a bit (it is July in a midwestern state, definitely no need for heat!).  We have eco temperatures set to 62-80.  It seems that must be connected to this challenge but not sure why...

Thanks for any help!

Hello ctm1,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

When your thermostat is set to Eco Mode, it'll prioritize its temperature range and won't follow your temperature schedule. Try adjusting the Eco Temperature range or disabling it to avoid sudden drops in temperature. Also, disable the Auto-schedule in the Nest Sense settings, then restart your thermostat to refresh.

Monitor your thermostat's behavior, and let me know how it goes.

Regards,

Hey there,

I'm checking back in — how's it going? Still need our help?

Thanks,

Mark

Hello Mark, I really appreciate you checking in.  Before I got to your response I simply turned it to "off" - so not in heating or cooling.  And then we had two days in a row that it turned on without myself or my spouse doing anything, which seems very strange.  At that point my attempt at a quick fix to keep it from randomly turning on and taking the house down to 50 degrees was to push "reset" on the whole system.  Thankfully it has not changed since the reset set up screen has come on.  I've avoided it since then...  I think we are back at square one.  In general we only use our air conditioning when it is unbearable, so perhaps manually turning it on/off is the best method for the next month or two.  Therefore, I should not set eco temperature, right?  Nor do we need any sort of schedule?  I will need to get all of this figured out before using the heat in the winter.  Frankly I'm feeling quite disillusioned and wishing I hadn't switched to the nest.

Hi ctm1,

Thanks for the update on what you've done to have it fixed. I'd suggest not activating the Home and Away Assist with the Eco Temperature and the Auto-schedule, but you can still create a Temperature Schedule if you prefer to change the temperature automatically with your specific temperature at a given time.

So for now, let's continue observing your thermostat's behavior and keep me posted if anything comes up.

Best,
Mark

Hey there,

I don't want to be a nudge, but I'd like to check if you were able to get your thermostat working. Feel free to reach back if you still need help.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your help. I reset the nest and left of off with no settings for the past 4-5 days. Just turned on the air again and did NOT set home/away sense or eco temps. I set it for 74 overnight and 78 at 6am, the house is currently 84.  We will see what happens tonight.

I “removed device” from the app on my phone and now I’m not able to get it back onto the app. When I try to “add device” and scan the QR code, nothing happens.

I think/hope we are getting closer.

Update!  It's morning at I think all went as planned per the response above, woohoo!  I think the next step is getting connected to the app.  Here is where things are at in the app:

1.  Under "Favorites" the heart button at the bottom of the app - nothing shows up and it gives the option to "+add favorites" - along the top there is the little upside down teardrop with a house in it and the name of our street...when I click on that, two boxes show up - a rectangle button labeled "___ Home" and then an oval button labeled with our street name.  I'm not sure why there are two button options here and they are different shapes...feels like I'm not understanding something.

2.  Under "Devices" button along the bottom - there are no devices currently.  Here is where I'm stuck.  Add devices>New Devices>Choose a Home....we only have one home but again we are running into two options...the one labeled our street address  and the ____ Home.  Why are there two options if we only have one home?

I think we need to get rid of one of those so there is only one...I'm not sure how to get rid of one...

Hello there,

I'm sorry for the late reply, and thanks for keeping us in the loop on what you've done to have your concern rectified. With this, here's how to delete a home structure:

  1. In the Google Home app
  2. If you notice you have more than one home, tap Favorites. At the top, tap the down arrow and select the home you want to edit.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and click Delete this home.
  5. Tap Delete Home to confirm

We're here if you have any other questions.

Best,
Mark
