Goodbye Nest

Why would I want to spend $500 to replace my three Nest thermostats with new Nests?  The only reason I purchased and installed these was to have WiFi remote access, and now that feature is being retired.  I've just finished replacing my Nests with Ecobees and am VERY happy.  Easy installation, better reviews, better interface, and less expensive (even with the Nest "discount").  Bye bye Nest.

I'm in the same boat too. I will NOT reward google with another purchase when they shut down the main feature for a perfectly working thermostat just because they want to force current owners to buy another.  I will gladly spend my money somewhere else and never buy google hardware again.   Shame on you google!

I'm not quite sure what the possible strain on the google/nest infrastructure could possibly be; i have a Gen1 and a Gen2 thermostat, and NEITHER of them have received an update since Sept. 2019.  There's no amount of bonus feature creep that could possibly make buying NEW "smart" thermostats tantalizing, especially with this expensive rug-pull .
Between this and their crippling of Google Assistant and their insistence on Gemini integration into everything, i'm cashing out of any and all google smart home integration. As soon as these nest smoke alarms fail, i'm sure they'll have implemented a buyback program for all the senseless e-waste they've generated, right? Or, should i just start throwing this stuff into the ocean now? What a multi-sided disappointment. I fold.

As I was waking and drinking my coffee this morning, it occurred to me that this was the plan all along: MUCH LIKE LITTLE BIRDS, WE ARE ALL MEANT TO GROW UP AND LEAVE THE NEST AT SOME POINT.

I would add that google hasn't made any real improvement to any nest products since they acquired the company long time ago. The hardware is the same, the design has even went down with the "cheap" plastic versions without the rotating dial, all the features are identical to when it debuted long time ago except for the google integration that doesn't make things better but the opposite.

Honestly, I don't undestand what can't be updated by a firmware update since the hardware has only a main feature: be a smart switch to open and close circuits to control the AC and sense temperature. There is nothing to update in the hardware area so the only thing that could be updated here is software, and any new "platform" can be programmed in an updated FW version to make it work. This is blatant corporate greed at its worst.

My house has not changed, my HVAC system has not changed, neither of my thermostats have even gotten updated since Sept. 2019... frankly, there's absolutely no space for any value-add here. I thought when i was buying $250+ thermostats that I wasn't going to EVER have to invest in another thermostat. Leave it to google to drop the classic, "... hold my beer - watch this."
