Google Nest Generation 4 Thermostat - Fan starts immediately and does not shut off.

In Google Home I can only tell it to run the fan for a certain time, but I cannot change it to Auto or off. When I do set it for a time, the fan doesnt shut off after time runs out.

Hi, @CoreyKliewer!

Thank you for posting in the community. I’m truly sorry the fan is not shutting off, I understand how important a reliable thermostat and system are to your daily life. Help’s here!

To gather all the necessary information and provide you with the best assistance, please answer the following questions:

  • When did the inconvenience start?
  • What other strange symptoms have you experienced since the problem started?
  • Are there any error messages?
  • Is this a new installation?
  • Have you checked your Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system's compatibility with your Nest thermostat through the Compatibility Checker tool?
  • Do you have a conventional or heat pump system?
    • Conventional System: Typically consists of two pieces of equipment (furnace and AC).
    • Heat Pump: Handles both heating and cooling with a single unit.
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Is this the first time you're activating heating or cooling since the season changed?
  • Would you mind sharing a picture of your old wiring configuration and the current one?
  • Do you have a common ground wire or C wire?

In the meantime please check the following:

  • Check the Energy History to see if some features are causing the fan doesn’t turn off. To get this information, check the following link: Thermostat Energy History. I’d appreciate it if you could share this information.
  • Check the Google Home app routines. Ensure no Google Assistant routines are interfering with your thermostat settings. Check out this article: Change Home & Away Routines settings.
  • Ensure wires are fully inserted: The wires may not be making a proper connection with the terminals. Make sure at least ¼ to ½ inch of the copper wire is exposed, straightened, and fully inserted into each of the required connectors. If necessary, Strip and re-insert the wires

Please let me know how it goes

Best regards,

Ana

Hi, @CoreyKliewer!

Thank you so much for answering all of my questions. I truly appreciate the detailed information you provided. I'm happy to assist you further.

To help me troubleshoot more effectively, please share a picture of the thermostat's energy history. Additionally, please let me know if you've created any routines with the thermostat and if the wires are fully inserted.

In the meantime, let's try these troubleshooting steps:

Important: Before you begin, turn off the power breaker to your HVAC system.

  • Restart the Power:
    • Remove the display from the base plate.
    • Take a clear photo of the wiring configuration.
    • Carefully remove all wires and clean them with a dry towel.
    • Reinsert the wires as shown in the photo.
    • Restore power to the HVAC system and reattach the display.

Please let me know if the fan is still running after restarting the power. If not, please follow the step below.

  • Factory Reset:
    • Perform a factory reset and set up the thermostat again.
    • During the setup process, specify whether the fan should turn on in heating or cooling mode to ensure it functions correctly. This will help me determine if the inconvenience is related to the setup process.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana
