Heat mode on and heating until temp reached then ac turns on

I have a Nest 3rd gen. When I set to Heat, the Heat works but as soon as it reaches temp, the outdoor ac unit turns on and blows cold air. The nest still shows that heat is on but now there's no way to turn off the ac w/out resetting. Ive already had an hvac person come out and he says that everything is set up correctly. Ive already returned one nest unit thinking it was a malfunction of the nest but this error is still occurring. I have a gas furnance with electric ac unit. I've checked previous posts, Heat pump posts and nothing seems to be a similar option to my setup. I don't see an option to post pictures. Appreciate the help!

Hi Matth4321,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Learning Thermostat is getting strange behavior with the heating, and after reaching the temperature, the AC turns on. Help’s here!

I appreciate all the details provided. To upload a picture through the community, please select the "camera icon" and take a picture, or select the ones that you have in your gallery photos; a picture of your current wiring installation would be very helpful.

Additionally, I'd like to ask the following details:

  • Just to confirm, do you have a conventional or heat pump system?
  • When did the issue start?
  • Are there any error messages?
  • Is this a new installation? If not, when did you install the thermostat?
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Do you have a schedule set on the Nest Learning Thermostat?

In the meantime, you can try the following:

  • If possible, try to install the previous thermostat to see if the inconvenience persists.
  • Check that the wires are fully inserted into the terminal and the connector buttons are securely pushed down. This ensures proper wire connections. For reference, you can check out this article: Troubleshoot strange heating or cooling behavior. Important: Before touching any wires, turn off the power to your HVAC system at the breaker box.

  • Check if Eco mode is enabled and disable it. Refer to this article for instructions: Set your Nest thermostat to heating, Eco, or off.

Please keep me posted.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
