Heating Issue - AC Compressor turning on instead of heat

I have had nest 3rd gen learning thermostat for over a year and has been working very well.

Over the weekend, I noticed that when I turned up the heat the ac compressor turns on and starts the AC instead of heat. There has been no changes to the system.

I tried to turn on the furnace heads-up to check the heat and that seems to run fine for 15 minutes. Currently using that to get some heat at home.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Hi kiriti,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Nest Thermostat. I'd love to know more about this and I have a few questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • How is your Nest Thermostat wired?
  • What is the power reading of your Nest Thermostat?

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi @EdwardT thanks for reaching out. I had a tech come in to solve the issue.

The problem was I wired the system a year ago following the old thermostat. I had no C power wire. The system worked fine for a year and had no issues. But a week ago this started blowing cold air instead of heat.

Turns out that I had the wiring wrong. I did not have a heat pump. So no brown wire connection. The tech was also surprised that the system was working fine for a year. Got the Blue wire hooked up and fixed the wiring. Now the system works fine.

The thing I learned from this experience is to make sure the wiring from your system matched the nest system and do not rely on the wiring form your old thermostat.
