I recently installed the Nest Learning thermostat and was happy to discover the filter reminder feature. It makes sense that the filter should be changed based on run time, not some arbitrary calendar date. However, I can't figure out how to alter the interval. It seems like it is permanently set at 1,000 hours.
What if I live with multiple pets, or have allergies, or live with a smoker, or live in a dusty environment? What if I use a filter with a higher MERV rating that may clog up faster and cause a decrease in airflow across my system?
No big deal - I can just look at the run time on the filter and decide to change it earlier, right? Wrong. There is no counter and no way to tell how far you are into the 1000 hour life of your filter.
This is a huge oversight on the part of the developers and something that can be easily changed - am I missing something????

I thought I must be missing something. For a “smart” thermostat - it ain’t so smart!
I can’t believe such an easy (and necessary) change hasn’t been implemented.
Anyhow, thanks for your reply - I’ll stop looking and keep my eyes open for an update.

Nope, your not missing anything, it has been this way since the Nest came out. It is also one of the most asked for features. I have a multi pet household, and have found that every 45 days is about right. I just set a reminder on my phone and turned the Nest reminder off. I also submitted a feature request in the nest app.

Agreed!

What a consequential overlook!

I agree. This is a simple software update that Nest/Google chooses to ignore requests for.
I do get a monthly report via email from Nest/Google that shows my usage each month and I just keep track of the hours that way. A nuisance, but its the only way to keep track of the hours the filter(s) have been in use. I change them about every 450 hours.

I agree. This should be a simple change to implement. The only workaround I've come up with is to set a reminder on my calendar to change it. I have pets and a dusty environment as the op stated. I just use the lower micron rated filters because they are less expensive. I've done the math and I can order a yr supply for less than a 3mo supply of the higher micron filters; so I change my monthly and like to change on the first of the month. 😒 they won't listen to the customer.

google is still trying to run our lives, it is their way or the highway

I would also like to add the filter size to the reminder

1000 hours is way too long for my part of town. The filter is so dirty by then that it concaves and limits air conditioner efficiency. It really needs to be set by the user and not Google since airborne particulates vary by location.
