have tried the standard answer for fixing the blowing hot air issue by resetting and checking all the wires and I even swapped the w1 and w2 cables to be sure I didn't cross a wire. But I'm still blowing hot air on the cool setting

Hey Blase,

Having cooling issues during the summer can be troublesome. Let's make sure you are good to go, and everything is working correctly. Do you mind me asking if you have a heat pump system? Are you able to send a picture of your current wire set up? Please let me know, so I can take a closer look.

Hi,

We have a Heat pump setup. Installed a Nest Learning Thermostat last fall and followed the installation instructions

Heat was working fine on Heat mode, but when Set the unit to cool and the unit started blowing hot air and temperature was continuously rising. Even when the thermostat was set to Off, i could feel warm air blowing from the vents. Only after turning off the breaker, the hot air from vent stopped. Even Eco mode was not working as it was only blowing hot air.
I also set the unit to off, turned off the heat pump/AC/furnace at the breaker box, waited 5 minutes, then powered everything back on.  Same result: warm air.

Interestingly, I also read the thread about going to settings | equipment | and looking at the heat pump, but those options don't exist.  But maybe it's for an older/different model nest?

Any suggestions appreciated

Was an answer to the  problem provided?

The only solution to the issue, according to Google, is to replace the thermostat. Before they will replace the thermostat you need to do 2 things though:
1.) Make sure the thermostat is still under warranty.

2.) Have an HVAC repair tech check your thermostat and give you an invoice detailing the problem.

If your Nest thermostat is out of warranty Google won't do anything for you. There is no software fix (even though it is clearly a software issue) and they won't replace the thermostat if it's out of warranty no matter how long you have used it (I bought a new-in-box 1st gen and used it for 6 months, but the thing was out of warranty already). They also require proof from an HVAC technician that the thermostat is to blame. You being able to install an older thermostat does not count, so you'll have to get a tech to come out and check the thermostat which (depending on your area) is around $100. Make sure you get the tech to give you a detailed invoice about the issue.

All of this to say, if your thermostat isn't under warranty don't bother with trying to get it replaced through Google. Save yourself the HVAC technician bill and just buy another thermostat.

I just got off the phone with customer service. I also was getting heat in cooling mode and vice versa. I have a O/B wire. The default was set to O, when I changed it to B it solved the issue. Now my system is cooling and heating properly. Hope this helps! 👊🏼

What color wires did you put on the OB?

How do you switch from O to B?

No heat pump.  And I’m still trying to figure out how to send a picture

I do not have a heat pump. It's a split system. The condenser is outdoors and the furnace and evaporator are indoors

Yes. And not sure if it is a heat pump

Any solutions for this, I guess not.. My 5 month old Nest decided to only blow hot air just yesterday!

Just had a long talk with tech support (after having an AC repair tech come out) basically the only thing they will do is replace it if it's in warranty. If it's out of warranty then they require you to purchase a new one. That's it. If you're reading this I hope your thermostat is in warranty because they won't do anything if it's not.

My thermostat has been blowing hot air, even when it says it is cooling. I had my AC guy come out to take a look at it, & after double-checking everything, he was able to get the system to blow cold air, only when the nest thermostat was not plugged in, & he determined that the issue was with the thermostat. After I saw similar issues online, I contacted support, but they were not able to help me & were trying to make me jump through all of these hoops to get my thermostat replaced, even though it is still under warranty. They said they needed an invoice to see the work that was done, but my AC guy did not make an invoice, & getting an invoice will cost me money. I am upset because I have been a loyal Google customer, owning numerous speakers, subscribed to Nest aware, having multiple nest doorbells, a Google display & this thermostat & I cannot conveniently get it replaced. I will not be buying another Nest thermostat since this product is known for being defective & I cannot guarantee myself a replacement if it should go wrong again. A thermostat is not something I should need to get replaced every couple of months, especially at the premium prices I have already paid.

Same problem! VERY disappointed with nest products, I am stuck with the expensive and defective thermostats.! Hate the nests' cameras too!

I am having the exact same problem… is there a solution?

No solution. Google will replace the unit, but it has to be under warranty and needs to be checked out by an HVAC technician (make sure you get an invoice).

Wow I have the same problem and it is extremely disheartening to see all these replies with the same problem and no remedy except a lot of hassle for what seems to be a known issue with the product. Shame on you Nest.

I had the same issue, called in support and through much troubleshooting I got replacement back plate and display. It ended up being the display. It broke within 2 years. But the new display immediately worked.

I still see people replying in this post asking for help, so let me post here in case somebody skips to the bottom.  Older generation Nest Learning Thermostats and Nest Thermostats that run into this problem have no solution to fix this issue. You will spend hours of time online or on the phone talking to support and all they will do is replace it IF it's still under warranty. If your thermostat is still under warranty they will require all of its information plus an invoice from a licensed HVAC technician detailing that the thermostat is the problem. You will still need to jump through hoops though to get your replacement. In the end they may just give you one from the same generation that will have the same problem (just make sure to ask).

If your older generation Nest Thermostat or Nest Learning Thermostat is not under warranty then they will do nothing. If you get it checked out by an HVAC technician, you will be out the cost of the service call plus you will need to buy a new thermostat. So before you call a technician for this, make sure your thermostat is still under warranty.

If you have a newer generation Nest Thermostat or Nest Learning Thermostat there is an easy software fix for this. In your settings you can change the default for the O/B wire, which is the issue if its blowing hot air while set to AC.

Whenever Google support told me there was no fix for my first gen Nest Learning Thermostat issue I bought a new Nest Thermostat and during setup it had an option to set the default for the O/B wire. To be clear and to set your mind at ease this most likely isn't an issue with your HVAC or your thermostat hardware. This is why the issue is so perplexing, it's an issue with your thermostat's software. Google no longer supports software/firmware updates for the older Nest Thermostats. The ONLY fix is to have a newer thermostat.

I figure mine out.  I swapped the wires color for color.  Super easy but it was blowing hot air on the cold setting.  I did verify that I had a heat pump.  All the wires went to the same colors on the nest.  Little did I know that the note at the bottom of the original Tstat was saying that the White wire, directly above the note,  was used at the O/B wire.  I was looking for an extra Orange wire for the O/B wire.  After paying the $129 for an OnTech to come out and install it, he said this was the most common fix that he sees.  Hope this helps.  Works great now.
