I don’t want my learning thermostat to learn my habits, I just want my house to stay 70 degrees all

At times during the day when I’m not home, the temp goes as high as 78 degrees.  This is causing issues with my roommate who works nights.  I want her to stay cool.  I bought a brand new nest thinking my current nest needed to be replaced, but the new one did the same thing yesterday.  As soon as she comes upstairs and is looking at the stat, the ac kicks on.

I have looked over my settings, my schedule consists of 70 degrees on all days.  Every setting that hints at changing temp throughout the day is disabled.

I recently invited roommate to the “family” so she can hopefully monitor temp from her phone.

can you think of anything I’m missing?

Hi @TravelingSarah,

Thank you for reaching out to the Google Nest community. I can understand your frustration with your Nest Thermostat not working as expected, especially since you've already checked your settings and purchased a new device. I'm sorry to hear about the trouble this has caused for both you and your roommate. I'd be happy to help you get this resolved.

To assist with troubleshooting, could you please provide the following information?

  • What is the specific model of your Nest Thermostat?
  • What type of heating and cooling system do you have? (furnace, heat pump, or boiler)
  • Do you see a specific power error code or message on your thermostat's display?
  • When was the last time your HVAC system received professional maintenance or cleaning?
  • Did your heating function without any issues during the last winter season?

I look forward to your response so we can find a solution for you soon.

Best regards,

Gabriela

I have a furnace, worked fine last time I used it, central air unit was brand new last summer.  I have the unit professionally serviced once per year, but since it was new last year, haven’t yet.

No error codes, AC clicks on just fine as soon as my roommate is standing in front of the thermostat looking at it.  That’s why I think it has to do with the home & away feature.  I think I have it disabled then it does it again.

Hi @TravelingSarah,

Thank you for your reply. I understand you're experiencing an issue with your Nest Thermostat's Home/Away Assist feature, and I'm happy to continue helping you with it.

It's important to know that Home/Away Assist utilizes your Nest device sensors and phone's location to determine if you are home. For optimal performance, please ensure that everyone with access to your Nest products has their phone's location services enabled.

To enable or disable phone location for Home/Away Assist, please follow these steps:

  1. Open the Nest app.
  2. Tap Settings (the Nest settings icon).
  3. Select Home/Away Assist.
  4. Choose What decides if you’re home.
  5. Select Use phone location.
  6. Tap the switch to expand the menu. This will show a list of all the people with shared control of your Nest home.
  7. Tap your name.
  8. Tap the switch to enable or disable the phone location for Home/Away Assist.

For more information, please check this article: Change Home/Away Assist settings

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Regards,

Gabriela
