Intermittent heating issue

How can I tell if my intermittent gas heating issue is with my thermostat or my gas furnace? My cooling is working fine but the heating portion intermittently turns on and sometimes it won't turn on. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this intermittent heating issue any ideas?

@DAR

Which Nest thermostat do you have, and how is it wired?

Is this a new install or one that was working before this?

Nest learning thermostat 3rd generation.  It's wired properly because the heating does work but it's intermittent.  I can usually get the heat to start up again by turning the thermostat off and on many times. It's not a new install.

Hi DAR,

I wanted to see if you could do a quick test to see if there's a possible issue in the wiring or a connector. Could you swap the heat and cooling wires and run the cooling mode (since swapped, it will run heat) and see if it still has the same intermittent behavior?

Thanks,
Jeff

The problem was with my furnace circuit board. It was overheating and got partially burnt so I'm going to replace it tomorrow and I'm fairly sure that was what was causing this issue. I have replaced the circuit board and that solved the issue.  Do you have any idea why I can't delete my original post here?
