Hi. I am new to the learning thermostat, had it installed replacing the traditional set up timer. We work all day so don't need the heating on. We also don't have the heating on though the night. How does it turn on in the morning prior tones waking to make sure it's warm? Do I have to turn it off when not using and turn it back on when i want it on?

You set the schedule for the temperature you want. This isn't the traditional on/off but the temperature in that time slot.
You want 20C @8:00am, tthen that's what you set. You leave home at 9:00am, then set some lower temperature (say 10C). The thermostat eventually learns how long it takes to heat the property and so 'pre-heats' to get that temperature at the requested time. You can, of course, set some rough defaults and then let it learn.

Thank you, so do I leave it on all of the time?

Yes. It's just a matter of choosing the schedule of the temperatures you want. You can also use the automatic home/away function (but make sure all inhabitants have their smartphone hooked up). Obviously if you're 'away' on holiday it's worthwhile switching to 'away' and also setting eco.
The difference between Nest and old-style is that Nest schedules temperature at a time, not on/off.
You can also check your history of usage in the app - so you can check that it's not heating whilst you're not there. If you set a temperature for when you come home then you could check that on the app. It should start pre-heating to get that temperature when scheduled.
