I am writing to express my deep frustration and disappointment regarding the recent discontinuation of essential app support for my Nest 2nd Generation thermostat.
I purchased this device specifically because of its smart features—most importantly, the ability to control my home’s temperature from my phone. My thermostat is in perfect working condition and has not failed in any way; however, core functionality that I paid for has now been disabled solely due to Google’s decision to end support. While I understand this may have been mentioned somewhere in fine print (which no reasonable consumer reads with the expectation that major features will be removed), the practice of intentionally rendering a functioning product obsolete is, in my view, entirely unethical.
This decision has caused me to lose trust in Google as a company. The Nest thermostat was advertised and sold as a smart device with app-based control, and removing those features after the fact feels more like forced obsolescence than responsible product lifecycle management. A device that I paid for and that still works physically should not have its primary features taken away.
While I appreciate the 45% discount offered toward a new Nest model, this does not resolve the underlying issue. A discount on a replacement does not restore the value of the product you disabled, nor does it rebuild my trust. Unless Google makes this right by restoring functionality or providing a more appropriate remedy, I can say with certainty that I will never purchase another Google-branded product again.
I hope Google reconsiders its position and provides a solution that respects its customers and the products they have invested in.

100% agree. To make it worse, I bit the bullet and bought a 4th gen thermostat, and it no longer works with the Nest app! Now I have to use it with the (inferior UI, IMO) Google Home app. The scheduling interface is incomprehensible and gives me nonsense errors whenever I try to save settings. It overrides my scheduling attempts with "learning" features that have my menopausal wife walking around the house with a thermometer at 5AM to document just how messed up the whole thing is. Thanks, Google.
