Two of my 3 google nests show low battery or batteries not detected even though new batteries have been put in. My HVAC system is working fine and was just serviced. The technician tried to put in new batteries but received error messages which I thought was a problem with the batteries but now I am having trouble with a new batch of batteries. I chatted with the nest bot, did suggested things which didn't help and I am listing below. I was then directed here. Hoping you might have a fix. Here is what I have tried although the order listed is random:
Switched the batteries from the working thermostat to a nonworking thermostate and the batteries no longer show as working.
Checked the C wire - all the wires are plugged in.
Turned the HVAC system off and on at circuit breakers.
Taken batteries out and waited and put them back in
Checked for corrosion - none visible
The bot had me tap the side of the thermostat and wanted me to click on the settings icon on the thermostat. There is an exclamation mark in settings icon center. The settings icon is nonresponsive when I click. I assume this settings icon is the same as settings on my phone so I could explore more here as I am able to access on my phone.
Checked to be sure my app is current. It was updated about a month ago.
Give batteries time to work - did that overnight.
Thanks so much for your help!

Hi @LB10,
Thank you for posting in the community! I understand that two of your three Nest Thermostat units are giving low battery or batteries not detected messages, even though you changed the batteries. I appreciate you sharing the troubleshooting steps you covered with our chat support. I know how inconvenient it is to deal with battery alerts right after a system service, and I’m happy to find a solution with you.
To ensure we’re on the same page, please provide the following details:
I look forward to your answer. Let’s correct the issue!
Regards,
Humberto

Hello Humberto,
Thank you for your email. I spoke with someone on the phone from Google Nest Support for quite a while. We did swap the one working display unit which worked fine at all 3 locations but the other 2 thermostats didn't work at any location. I am using brand new Energizer non-rechargeable batteries all of which are fine in the one working thermostat. The technician concluded that the problem couldn't be fixed. I didn't think to post this sad conclusion, but thank you for reaching out.

I actually have the same issue and it’s been really confusing to troubleshoot. I’ve also tried swapping batteries, checking for corrosion, restarting the system, and even moving batteries between units, and I noticed the same thing you did batteries that worked fine in one thermostat suddenly show as low or not detected in another. That makes it feel less like a battery problem and more like something going on with the thermostat itself. The unresponsive settings icon with the exclamation mark is especially concerning, because it seems like the device isn’t functioning normally at a system level.
I’ve also gone through the usual steps like checking the C wire and resetting power, but nothing seems to fix it long-term. It almost feels like either a hardware issue or maybe a firmware glitch that’s affecting certain units. I’m also wondering if the base plate or internal contacts might be the problem, since everything else seems ruled out. If anyone has found a real fix or knows whether this usually ends up needing a replacement, I’d really appreciate the insight because I’m dealing with the same problem and running out of things to try.
