Moved into House with NEST Thermostats - still connected to old account

We have recently moved into our new home and have inherited two Google Nest Thermostats. one upstairs and one downstairs. I don't know if they are 2nd generation or third generation, seem unable to find any clear information on how to tell which one it is.

The previous occupant has left them connected to their account, so I can not connect to the Nest App.

I need to remove the previous occupants account but whilst many people have said this is achievable through a Reset - All Settings (there is no Reset - Account Reset like some tutorials have indicated which would make this so much easier), I am concerned that if I wipe out all the settings that I will need to set everything back up and am not going to have the answers. The knowledge based article on resetting said you need to record your wiring settings but I am unsure where to find these.

Am I overcomplicating the reset or could someone please details what settings you will need to take down before resetting please?

Hi @tubzinho,

Thanks for reaching out to the community. I’m sorry to hear that you're having trouble removing your Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd Gen) from the previous occupant's account, and I can understand that it could seem complicated to set a Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd Gen) after a factory reset, but don’t worry, help is here.

Before you perform a factory reset or an account reset, it is important that you go to Settings and then Equipment and take a picture of the wiring configuration of your Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd Gen).

You can also try to do an account reset instead of a factory reset to remove the thermostat from the previous account using the following steps:

On your Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd Gen):

  1. Go to Settings, then Reset, and then Account Connection.
  2. When the thermostat finishes the reset, open your Nest App and then select Add Product. When the Nest app asks you to scan the QR code, you can remove the Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd Gen) from its base and scan the QR code on the back of it.
  3. Follow the instructions in the Nest App to connect the Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd Gen) to your account.

For more information, you can take a look at the following articles: Add your Nest thermostat to the Nest app, Restart or reset a Nest thermostat.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards.

Derick.
