3rd Generation - I have two thermostats tried everything with the one to get it to see and kick in AUX heat- it wont tool the other thrmostat that does see aux heat and tried it and it recognized aux heat and ran it.  I put the other nest back on and it still wont kick in. have done a factory reset and and still wont kick in - it will show emergency heat but not AUX - All heat tests are good. Our lasty test was to run it up 10 degrees and the air out of the register is hot enough to be aux heat but the nest does not indicate that it is in aux heat

Hi LTM,

Uh-oh! If your heat pump is operating to heat your home when the outside temperature is above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, it is working as intended. Heat pumps are designed to be the primary heating source and operate efficiently in milder temperatures. AUX heat is a second source of heat in some heat pump systems, providing a quicker solution to maintain comfort in harsh weather or quickly change home temperature. Heat pumps are effective but take longer to heat the colder it gets outside. AUX heat, typically powered by a gas furnace or electric heating elements, is used to assist the heat pump when the outside temperature drops below a certain threshold (balance point), as heat pumps become less efficient as the temperature gets colder. Learn more about this here in Heat Pump Balance article.

Let us know if that helps.

Best,

Zoe
