I set up my Nest thermostat some time ago and generally it works okay. We have a heat pump and no alternate heating method. It’s recently gotten cold (below 25) for a few nights. The heat pump seems to run continuously and the air coming out is cool. The temperature never really rises. We now understand this is a common issue with heat pumps and we have the option to use emergency heat (the coils). I turned on Emergency Heat last night and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Nest in the Google Home says it is using Emergency Heat but the temperature is not changing. In the app I noticed I have the ability to turn on Alt Heat. To be clear, I do not have an alternate heating source. It says Alt Heat is Electric. In my wiring I have a black wire (my understanding is this is for emergency heat) but it is not connected to anything. All wiring diagrams I’ve found online show the black wire connected to a separate slot for *. My Nest only has a combination O/B and * slot to which the orange wire is connected. The black wire is not connected to anything. I’m wondering if my wiring is correct and if I should have the option for Alt Heat available or did I configure incorrectly.

Post a picture of the current thermostat's wiring.
Post a picture showing the terminal block on the control board in the furnace/air handler

@Patrick_Caezza Thank you for responding. I do not know what or where the terminal block is so I will work on figuring that out today. In the meantime, I’ve attached a picture of my nest setup.

Do you have a picture of the original thermostat's wiring?

You appear to have the wiring correct on the Nest.
Verify that all wires are fully seated is the terminals on the Nest
Do you remember what wires you told the Google Home app you had installed during setup?
This is what I think you should have selected.
W/W1, Y/Y1, G/G1, R, C, O/B, Other

@Patrick_Caezza I’m pretty confident I would have selected only the wired I have used. Is there a way to check?
