Nest 3rd gen not cooling

I've been having issues with my new thermostat. It either cycles the fan on/off constantly (within seconds) or just blows very little air. I never had this problem with the thermostat I just replaced. The air blows cool so the compressor is running but the fan has issues. I have an all electric unit. The wires used are: W, Y, Rc, and G. I don't have a common wire but the thermostat is not showing errors or running low on power. I will not add a C wire at extra expense as documentation says that it wasn't required and the thermostat is maintaining power. I've also read that adding a C wire does not always fix issues. How do I fix this? Or, do I just return it?

Hi @HotAtHome,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community! I'm sorry to hear that the fan doesn't turn on as expected in your Nest Learning thermostat 3rd gen. Help's here!

I also apologize for the delay in response. To better assist you, I'd like to ask a few questions:

  • "When did the issue start?"
  • Is this a new installation?
  • What kind of HVAC system do you have? Is it conventional or a heat pump?
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Have there been any recent changes or upgrades to your HVAC system?
  • Does the inconvenience happen on heating only or cooling only as well?

At the moment, I'd suggest the following:

  • Check the thermostat’s Energy History for more information about the thermostat's previous-day activity. This step is helpful to identify what causes the unusual thermostat activation.
  • Disable Auto-schedule. You can refer to the next article for instructions: Disable learning for the temperature schedule.
  • Make sure the wires are completely inserted into the terminals. Ensure the connector buttons stay fully pressed down. Note: For safety, turn off the power for your HVAC system.
  • Once, I performed the previous steps. Check the screen to see if it is able to turn blue when you want cooling or orange when you want heat, but the HVAC system doesn't turn on.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
