Nest Cooling Instead of Heating intermittently

Heat worked fine with previous generation Nest. Blows cold air when heat is selected but only sometimes. Sometimes the heat works fine. Last night the temp got to 50 in the house and was blowing cold air. I’ve searched here for answers but since it only happens sometimes, I don’t think it’s a wiring issue.

Hi, @Jnburns!

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I’m truly sorry your system is giving cool air instead of heating; I understand the importance of the system working properly and even more the importance of the heater in winter. I’m happy to help you!

To troubleshoot effectively, please answer the following questions:

  • What type of thermostat do you have?
  • Do you have a conventional or heat pump system?
    • Conventional System: Typically consists of two pieces of equipment (furnace and AC).
    • Heat Pump: Handles both heating and cooling with a single unit.
  • Would you mind sharing a picture of your current wiring configuration?
  • Would you mind sharing a picture of your old wiring configuration?
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Does the issue happen with heating only, cooling only, or both?
  • Is the thermostat displaying any error message?

In the meantime, ensure wires are fully inserted: The wires may not be making a proper connection with the terminals. Make sure at least ¼ to ½ inch of the copper wire is exposed, straightened, and fully inserted into each of the required connectors. If necessary, strip and reinsert the wires.

For additional troubleshooting steps, you can refer to this article: Troubleshoot strange heating or cooling behavior.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana
