Nest Learning Thermostat Away Setting

KMJU
Community Member

My Nest Learning Thermostat is located in a place I and others do not frequently pass by.  Not an issue during the mild months but now that some us are in the throes of winter, I'm finding that my Nest Learning Thermostat thinks I'm "Away" and shuts the heat off even when I'm sitting in the next room.  It seems to be defaulting to Away after only about an hour or so.

Wondering if there's a setting that would extend whatever time it takes to decide I'm not home, even though I am.

Thanks.

Hi KMJU,

Uh-oh! I'm sorry to hear that your thermostat thinks your away though you're not. By any chance, were you talking on the phone at the time you got home? Follow these:

  1. Make sure that your Nest Thermostat is online.
  2. Check which devices are set to contribute to Home and Away. This may include sensors from Nest devices and phone location from home members.
    • Settings > Home/Away Assist > What decides if you’re home
  3. Make sure location services are turned on for any contributing mobile devices.
    • Check if location services are turned on as it is necessary for Home and Away to work properly.
  4. Check if there are multiple devices signed into the same account.
    • Being signed into multiple devices at once can cause issues with Home and Away behavior.
    • You should invite trusted home members to share access to the home with their own account in the app instead of sharing the same account.
    • After accepting the home invite, each home member can contribute their own phone’s location to Home and Away to prevent unexpected behavior, like the thermostat going into Eco mode while someone’s still home.
    • Refer to Learn about Family Accounts and how to share access to your Nest home for more information about sharing home access using the Nest app or refer to Share a home and devices in the Google Home app for how to do this in the Google Home app.
  5. Check to see if the app recorded any activity in history view.
    • Any recorded activity. This should provide an explanation of when and why the home state changed over the previous 10 days. For example, the note "Home: Activity in the house. Living Room Thermostat 7:30 P.M." means that the home switched out of Away mode because your thermostat saw activity.
      • Go to Settings > Home/Away Assist > Activity History
      • Select the date that Home and Away did not work as expected

Keep us posted.

Best,

Zoe
