Nest Learning Thermostat - Heat and Air running concurrently

REPOST - @zoeuvre I was waiting for the issue to occur again, but previous thread was closed by time it did again. It just happened again. This time the heat was running, and I attempted to turn it down 4 degrees. This led to the outside A/C unit kicking on, and despite turning the unit thermostat to the off position, it continued to run. Only way to turn off was to turn off at breaker. I checked the history and nothing out of the ordinary was shown, only the heat running for around 2 hours per day.

Hello, I saw this discussed elsewhere, but I was not able to see a fix. This issue has been happening for over a year, and I have already had my Learning Thermostat swapped out once in case it was an equipment issue. It randomly occurs that when the heat is running, the outdoor A/C unit will also begin to run. Vice versa, in the summer, it also occurs that the furnace will turn on when the A/C is running. I've called about this issue a dozen times, and nothing seems to help. The wiring appears correct. It happened again today, so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi mattmono3,

Thanks for gettong back to us, and I'm sorry to hear what happened. I'd like to take a look at this for you.

Can you help me with a photo of your Nest Learning Thermostat's base where the wires are connected? Also, the reason why the last thread was already closed is because, as Community Specialists, we occasionally do a bit of housekeeping to keep the conversations in our community fresh and relevant. This includes locking threads after a period of inactivity.

Please keep me posted, I'm happy to help.

Best,

Zoe

Hi there,

Thanks for the information. Let's try to do it this way by following the steps below:

  1. Turn off the power to the HVAC system.
  2. Remove the thermostat display.
  3. Remove the Y1 wire then tuck it inside the hole on the wall where it won't touch other thermostat wires.
  4. Reinstall the thermostat display and make sure it clicks into place.
  5. Turn the power back on.
  6. Call for heat on the Nest Thermostat, then observe if the outside AC unit willl also run.

Also, do the same thing of removing the W1 wire then calling for cool in the Nest Thermostat, then observe if the furnace will run.

Regards,

Zoe
