Nest Learning Thermostat short cycles

I have a Nest Learning Thermostat and my furnace will short cycle. You set it at a temp it will say 15 mins well it will run maybe 13 mins shut down for 2 mins then run a couple more mins and shuts off because its at the temp. The next time it turns on it does it again. I also notice when you set it for 73 it will run till 74. I have had 2 heating and air  companies here and they could not find nothing wrong with the furnance. They all say the Nest thermostat is junk and tell me it's the thermostat. Is there anything I can do to this thermostat before I throw it out and buy something else?

Hi KB9HGI,

Yikes! I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your Nest Learning Thermostat and the short cycling of your furnace. Short cycling can be frustrating, but here are a few steps you can take to address the problem:

  1. Ensure that your Nest Thermostat is properly connected to a C-wire (common wire) or has a compatible power source. The C-wire provides a continuous power supply to the thermostat, which can help prevent issues like short cycling. If your thermostat doesn't have a C-wire, you may consider installing one or using a compatible power source, such as a power extender kit, to provide a stable power supply.
  2. Check your air filter, as a clogged filter might cause a similar symptom. If the air filter is dirty and needs to be changed, replace the air filter and let us know after you change the filter. Refer to the air filters and filter reminders article for more details.
  3. Make sure that your Nest Thermostat's firmware is up to date. Occasionally, firmware updates can address bugs and improve the performance of the thermostat. Check for firmware updates in the Nest app or consult Nest Support for guidance on updating the firmware.
  4. Try performing a reset on your Nest Thermostat and reconfigure it from scratch. This can help eliminate any software glitches or incorrect settings that might be causing the short cycling issue.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe
