Nest Learning Thermostat works intermittently

The thermostat works most of the time, but often it shows orange and that it's working but the heat does not go on. In order to get it to work I turn the heat down until it's black again and then turn it back up and then it works again. This is a forced air natural gas system. Never had any issues with the old thermostat.

Hi JamieH,

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that your heat does not go on though the thermostat says otherwise. Let's see what's going on. A few questions:

  • Are you located in North America or Europe?
  • Is the Nest Thermostat newly installed?
  • Does the thermostat screen indicate that it’s actively calling for heating?
  • What type of furnace do you have? (gas, electric, etc.)
  • When did heating last work?
  • Did heating ever work with the Nest Thermostat? If not, did the heating work with the previous thermostat?
  • Did you turn off the power to the HVAC system?
    • Did you recently turn off any breakers?
    • Have you recently experienced a brownout or blackout?
    • Is there a light switch near the heater that controls an outlet?
  • Did you select the correct fuel type?
  • Do the LED lights blink on the HVAC control board? If yes, locate the light.
  • When was the last time you changed the furnace's air filter?
  • Have you experienced extremely cold weather lately?
  • Is this the first notable temperature drop of the year in the area?

Keep us posted.

Best,

Zoe

Hi Zoe, Here are the answers to your questions

  • Are you located in North America or Europe? Canada
  • Is the Nest Thermostat newly installed? Yes
  • Does the thermostat screen indicate that it’s actively calling for heating? Yes
  • What type of furnace do you have? (gas, electric, etc.) Gas, forced air system
  • When did heating last work? It's intermittent. If I reduce the heat to below the actual temp and turn it back up again it resolves the problem temporarily
  • Did heating ever work with the Nest Thermostat? If not, did the heating work with the previous thermostat? Yes, it works but it has been intermittent since install
  • Did you turn off the power to the HVAC system?
    • Did you recently turn off any breakers? When it was installed, but it does work, just inetrmittent
    • Have you recently experienced a brownout or blackout? No
    • Is there a light switch near the heater that controls an outlet? No
  • Did you select the correct fuel type? Yes
  • Do the LED lights blink on the HVAC control board? If yes, locate the light. N/A
  • When was the last time you changed the furnace's air filter? Recent
  • Have you experienced extremely cold weather lately? No
  • Is this the first notable temperature drop of the year in the area? No

Let me know your thoughts. I have turned off the Nest learning system and it seems to work now, but kind of not why I purchased the Nest. Thanks

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to us, and I'm sorry for the late response. Check your air filter, as a clogged filter might cause a similar symptom. If the air filter is dirty and needs to be changed, replace the air filter and let us know if the issue continues after they change the filter. Refer to the Air filters and filter reminders article for more details.

Regards,

Zoe
