Nest Thermostat Dual Fuel Heat Pump / Natural Gas Secondary Fuel

Hi,

It seems there are a number of basic heat pump features that are missing in the 4th Gen Nest Thermostat that could easily be added to improve heating efficiency. It seems dual fuel heating systems will be much more common in the future as people replace a/c units with heat pumps. I want the nest to choose heat pump in almost all scenarios, but it is always more expensive than gas where I live M-F 5-9pm, and otherwise always less expensive down to 20 degrees.

Also allowing the secondary fuel to come on if projected time to target temperature is more than 2 hours seems appropriate.

I would also like the nest to switch to natural gas if the heat pump isn't working automatically.

It would be a simple programming update to allow the following:

1- Ability to use secondary fuel (High Efficiency Nat Gas) based on time to reach temperature.

2- Ability to use secondary fuel (High Efficiency Nat Gas) based on Time of Use peak periods.

3- Ability to switch to secondary fuel if temp is unchanged after 15 minutes or user defined value.

Are these features available behind a password?

Are there any other ways to change to secondary fuel besides adjusting the cutoff temperature?

-Dan

I just browsed the Ecobee support and they provide user controls for #1 and #3 above. Do I return my Nest?
