Nest Thermostat Early On feature won't turn off

My Nest Thermostat has the Early On feature turned off, but it still tries to preheat the house. I have cycled the setting from off to on and back to off and I have restarted my thermostat. I don't want it to preheat because my electricity rates are higher from 6 to 9 am and I have my thermostat set lower to avoid using heat during those times.

Hi jmfife1964,

Uh-oh! I'm sorry to hear that the Early-On feature of your Nest Thermostat won't turn off. You can change Early-On settings on your thermostat or with the Nest app or Google Home app here in the Early-On article.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe

Sounds like they already are familiar with how to change the setting since they're toggling it on and off. I'm having the same issue. Early on is disabled, but my thermostat consistently turns on about 2-3 hours before my set temperature. Funny enough, some days it fights with itself because Away Assist doesn't detect motion so it turns preheat off. Super smart thermostat! I'm on a heat pump system.

Google, how can I actually disable preheating on my system if Early On is turned off?

Hi jessiah331,

Follow these steps to disable preheating on your Google Nest Thermostat.

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap on the thermostat icon to access the settings for your Google Nest Thermostat.
  3. Look for the gear icon or the "Settings" option within the thermostat interface and tap on it.
  4. The thermostat settings should display a preheating or early-on feature, with specific wording varying depending on app version and firmware. Look for "Preheat" or "Early-On" options.
  5. To prevent your HVAC system from heating before the scheduled time, toggle the switch or option to disable preheating.
  6. To save changes made to the preheating settings, simply tap on the "Save" or "Done" button after disabling it.

Additionally, disabling preheating can impact the time it takes for your home to reach the desired temperature, especially during colder weather. If you experience issues or discomfort, adjust your thermostat schedule or consult an HVAC professional to optimize your heating system's performance.

Let us know if that helps.

Thanks,

Zoe

Just quoting my initial post here "Early on is disabled, but my thermostat consistently turns on about 2-3 hours before my set temperature.". Attached are 3 screenshots:

  1. A screenshot showing Early On is disabled. This has been disabled since I installed the system in 2018.
  2. My schedule, showing the weekday mornings to be 70 degrees at 8am and on the weekends to be 71 degrees at 12:30pm.
  3. My history, showing heat turning on to preheat around 6am on weekdays (Thursday and Friday, 2 hours ahead of scheduled on) and around 10:30am Saturday (2 hours ahead of scheduled on).

Early on is disabled, but my thermostat consistently turns on about 2-3 hours before my set temperature. Why does my heat turn on 2 hours before it is scheduled to be on if Early On is disabled?

Hi there jessiah331,

I'm sorry for the confusion. Based on the information you provided, it seems that your Nest thermostat is turning on the heat a few hours before the scheduled temperature, even though the Early On feature is disabled. This behavior is unexpected, and I understand your concern.

  1. Double-check your thermostat's schedule settings to ensure they reflect your desired temperature and timing, and check for conflicting or overlapping settings that may cause early heat activation.
  2. To ensure optimal performance, ensure your Nest thermostat has the latest firmware installed, as software updates can address known issues and improve device performance. Visit the Nest website or contact Nest support for confirmation.
  3. Restarting your Nest thermostat by turning it off and on again can help resolve temporary glitches or software issues causing unexpected behavior.
  4. If the issue persists, you can perform a factory reset on your Nest Thermostat to reset all settings to their default values, but this will erase any personalized settings and schedules.

Regards,

Zoe
