Nest Thermostat not activating stage 1 heating

Couple months ago I had to replace an old nest learning thermostat because the wifi went out, bought a new one, installed it, but I didn't do the testing part, since everything had been working fine and nothing had been changed, then temps got colder outside and needed to run the heater, only to find out that first stage was not working at all, re-checked wiring and everything, and tried to do the testing part, stage one doesn't turn on. After a couple hours of tech support with google, doing all kinds of troubleshooting, and blaming my set up since it didn't have a C wire, they came to the conclusion that the thermostat was bad and that they were going to replace it, so in the mean time I found the old Honeywell I had way before, installed it and everything worked beautifully. The replacement thermostat was going to take several days, but since the thermostat was still under the return window at the store I took it there instead and they gave a sealed brand new one! Before I went to install it, I decided to run a new thermostat wire so I could have a C wire and all, so I install everything, same issue, stage one won't fire up, stage two works fine, back to troubleshoot with google, we did all kinds of tests, sent them pictures of both the furnace and baseplate, we even had a video chat so they could see all the wiring, they made me swap Y1 for W1 and have the thermostat to cooling and that worked! stage one fired right up! they decided that this brand new thermostat was also faulty and they will send a replacement. So what are the chances of me picking up TWO brand new faulty thermostats? I have a feeling that is not the hardware, but the software not playing nicely with my setup! I had been looking here in the forums and I am having the same problem this person had unfortunately that thread got closed before it got solved. Does anybody have an idea of what's going on? I'm about to throw away the nest and install that 15 year old Honeywell...

Hi GLZ,

Uh-oh! I understand that you're experiencing difficulties with two brand new Nest thermostats, and you suspect that the issue might be related to the software compatibility with your setup. Could you share with us a photo of your previous thermostat wiring and a photo of how you connected the wires to the Nest Thermostat base so I can take a closer look?

Keep us posted.

Best,

Zoe

Hi there,

I'm sorry for the late reply. Does your system has second stage cooling or is a heat pump system?

Thanks,

Zoe

Two stage cooling and two stage heating (gas, forced air)
