Nest compatibility with variable speed heat pump compressor

I work for an electric utility in Oregon that is providing rebates for smart thermostats.  Specifically Nest and Ecobee brands.  We were told by multiple HVAC contractors that the Nest and Ecobee product are not fully compatible with the inverter driven heat pumps with variable speed compressors.  Can anyone confirm the compatibility of these products with variable speed compressors?  I saw a different answer confirming the Nest Learning thermostat is compatible with 1-3 stage fans, but nothing about the compatibility with the compressor.  Thank you.

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum and for showing interest in our Nest Thermostats. A simple 1 or 2-stage compressor with a variable-speed air handler should work with our Nest Thermostat, specifically the Nest Learning Thermostat. The Nest Thermostat was designed to work with most HVAC systems, but does not support variable-speed air handlers.
