Nest keeps showing Away even though Home/Away assist is off

My Google Nest app seems to have a mind of its own.  I have Home/Away Assist turned off, yet it keeps switching to 'Away' mode.  While I'm still in the house.  Any ideas how to stop it from switching?

Home/Away assist use your cellphone functions to work fine. I recommend verifying the updates for both your software version and the Nest app. You can try to delete and reinstall the app to make sure it is updated. Also, you can try to perform a Reset On Your Thermostat and set up this feature again.

None of those suggestions worked, unfortunately.  The problem with the "Nest Home and Away not working" is that the suggestions were to help fix problems where the user actually wants to use Home and Away.  I don't.  I have the Home/Away Assist off, but it keeps flipping to 'away' even though I'm at home.  I saw one user saying you have to Location permissions set to "always on."  I tried that, but it still didn't work.
