Nest thermostat coming out of ECO mode for no reason

We have several thermostats in the house.  I want to keep one in ECO mode all the time; turning ECO mode off as heating is needed in the room. This used to work.  The past few months the thermostat comes out of ECO mode on its own, regardless of the global home setting.  What changed?

Now, I disabled all options, including home/away assist.  To no avail.  Ideas?

Hi skohalmi,

I understand how important it is to maintain energy efficiency in your home, and ECO mode being reliable is key to that. Let's see what we can figure out to get it working properly again. There are a couple of possibilities why your thermostat might be switching out of ECO mode even though you've disabled features like Home/Away Assist. Here are some things to check:

  • Schedules: Double-check your thermostat's schedule. It's possible a pre-programmed schedule is overriding the ECO mode settings. Look for any heating or cooling programs that might be conflicting with ECO mode.

  • Routines: If your thermostat integrates with a smart home system, there could be a routine set up that adjusts the temperature. Check for routines in your smart home app or the thermostat app itself.

  • Temperature Sensors: Some thermostats use remote temperature sensors to adjust settings. If a sensor in another room detects a drop in temperature, it might trigger heating even if the thermostat itself is in ECO mode. Consider disabling remote sensors if you're sure you only want ECO mode in that specific area.

  • Manual Adjustments: Have any family members or housemates been manually overriding the ECO mode settings on the thermostat itself?

You can also use this help article to learn more about how ECO mode works.

Keep me posted!

Hello Ivan,

Thank you for the response and going to the possible culprits.  I checked all, the only possibility is:

Schedules: Double-check your thermostat's schedule. It's possible a pre-programmed schedule is overriding the ECO mode settings. Look for any heating or cooling programs that might be conflicting with ECO mode.

But I thought that the point of, function of manually setting ECO was to override everything.  Here is what the Nest website says at

Behaviors when manually switching to Eco Temperatures

Your thermostat and system behaviors are different when you manually switch to Eco Temperatures compared to when it’s automatically set:

  • It’ll maintain Eco Temperatures even if someone comes home.
  • It won’t switch back to your regular temperature schedule until you manually switch it to a heating or cooling mode.
  • If you have more than one thermostat in your home, you’ll have to individually switch each of them to Eco Temperatures.
  • If you manually set your thermostat to Eco Temperature, your home won’t switch between Home or Away modes.
Best,  SK

I would like to override the thermostat schedule.  Not just till the next schedule change, but until I change it manually.  Used to do this with the ECO setting, which no longer works.  What are the other alternatives?
