Nest thermostat not restarting after one or two cycles

We are having an issue where the unit runs fine for one or two cycles then it will just not turn back on. I hear a click but then nothing it does not turn the air conditioner back on. If we wait a couple hours and try it again it will fire back up and run like normal. Any thoughts?

IMO, check that the wires to the thermostat base and furnace terminals are properly connected (tight in the connector).

Some (read as: "most modern") equipment will lock out a demand for cooling or heating if the thermostat demands a cycle too soon after a previous cycle completed, so you might want to check the furnaces owner's manual for features like that. That said, a couple of hours is an excessive delay. Hopefully it's just a poor connection. Best of luck!

The equipment is 20 years old and we have had this nest for about 7 years we did redo all the wire connections on both end just to make sure that was not it a few days ago. Any other thoughts? Could we just have  a nest going bad or something like that? we had it on cool only and just switched it to auto heat cool mode and it started back up once then did the same thing again.

7 years on the Nest- I'd call support.

If they're not helpful and you don't want to call an HVAC tech just yet, $25 buys a cheap mechanical thermostat from Home Depot that you can use to see if the problem goes away with a different thermostat (or maybe a friend has a nest you can borrow).
