Nest thermostats switch to Home mode if internet drops

I have 2 gen3 thermostats, a Protect, and an Outdoor IQ cam in my vacation home which is 4 hrs drive away.
The home sometimes goes 2-4 weeks unused, so we like it to drop into 'Eco' mode while we aren't there so we aren't heating an empty house for weeks and weeks.

The last couple days, every time I check on the house, the heat is back on and both thermostats are out of Eco and in 'Home' mode.

I've tried it disabling each thermostat and Protect from being the trigger if we are away but the behavior continues so I don't think I have a bad device or a spider building a web in front of one of them :). It appears that we've had 'micro outages'... internet drops then comes back on... because the camera has short (few minutes) of blackout periods into yesterday. Is a brief internet drop what is kicking the thermostats out of Eco mode? Is this known/expected behavior? Can't find anything searching the forum...

Hi TahoeJim,

Uh-oh! Brief internet drops or disruptions can indeed cause Nest Learning Thermostats to exit Eco mode and switch to Home mode. The Nest Learning Thermostats rely on a stable internet connection to communicate with the Nest servers and receive updates, including changes to the thermostat mode. During an internet outage, the thermostats may temporarily lose their connection to the servers. When the connection is restored, they may sync with the latest settings, which could include switching out of Eco mode. To address this issue, you can try the following steps:

  1. Ensure that your vacation home has a reliable and stable internet connection. If you notice frequent or prolonged internet outages, consider contacting your internet service provider to address the issue.
  2. Double-check the settings on your Nest Thermostats to ensure that Eco mode is enabled and properly configured. Make sure that you have set the desired parameters for Eco mode, such as the temperature range and schedule.
  3. If you anticipate extended periods of inactivity in your vacation home, you can adjust the thermostat schedule to align with your usage patterns. For example, you can create a custom schedule that reflects the times when you are away and set Eco mode accordingly.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Zoe

yep the internet went back to normal and my thermostats' behavior also is back to normal.

My only feedback is your replies are much too slow. This is nice confirmation, but I was actively debugging this problem when I posted, and it was solved within 24 hours of my post with help from reddit feedback which I received the same day.
