Any thermostat made has the same basic functionality.  In your case, if the desired set point for HEAT mode is say 68°, and the temperature drops 1° below 68, the call for heat will be made. If you make the set point 65° and the temperature drops to 64°, again the thermostat will make a call for Heat.  
Before you manually increased set point to 68° or higher, what was the temperature set point and what was the ambient room temperature?
