Newbie Question re Thermostat

Peter-
Community Member

Hey folks greetings from Henley.

We are new to Nest Thermostat, just installed on our system by engineer. Is there a way to have different schedules for different seasons? Seems an obvious thing to have to avoid heating in the summer etc but I don't see any obvious reference to it?

Also our system seems to fire up during the night when it should be completely off. Happens at all sorts of different times, eg 1.30 am  and also 5 am. Hard to pinpoint a pattern as usually asleep!

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Peter-,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry for the delay. What type of Nest Thermostat do you have? I can leave this support article for you to get the full information about Nest Thermostat Schedules. Your thermostat might set to the default schedule that's why it keeps changing its temperature automatically. I suggest turning off the Auto Schedule.

Best,

Jenelyn

Hi Jenelyn, thanks for your response. I thought that I had found the problem, but having found that the boiler was still firing up at 1.30am I haven't found the answer. I found that the Eco setting had been left at 20°c and that that setting was overriding my schedule setting of 16°c but after I changed the Eco temperature to a lower figure the boiler was still firing up during the night. The software version is 5.9.5-2 if that helps at all

Hey Peter-,

Thanks for keeping me in the loop. Do you have a schedule created for your Nest thermostat? If not, please go to your Google Home app and check for Schedules and make sure it's cleared out. In any case you found a schedule there, you can follow the steps below to delete it:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Select your thermostat.
  3. Tap Schedules.
  4. Tap the day of the week that has the temperature you’d like to remove.
  5. Select the temperature you want to remove.
  6. Tap Delete. The temperature will be removed from the schedule for that day.

Thanks for those steps to delete the schedule that I created when the Nest was first installed. Before doing that can I just query with you the purpose of deleting that schedule? By way of a reminder my questions were two fold :- can I gave multiple schedules eg a winter one and a summer one... At present I have just the one and can't figure out how to create and load a second one? Secondly the system is firing up when it should be off in the early hours of the morning? What else apart from the Eco setting could be causing this to happen? many thanks, Peter

Hey Peter,

If you're the one who manually creates the schedule, it's fine to let it stay there. For schedules, it will only allow you to choose your temperature preference within a specified time and/or day. Also, Nest Thermostats can use Early-On to start heating or cooling early so that your home reaches the scheduled temperature on time. Please check if this feature is enabled.

You can follow  these steps to check your thermostat Early-On feature:

  1. Press your thermostat ring to open the Quick View menu.
  2. Select Settings Nest settings icon.
  3. Select Nest Sense.
  4. Select Early-On.
  5. Make sure it is disabled.

Thanks for that Jenelyn. As the boiler is firing at around 1.30 am I don't think that it can be the preheat feature, which yes is switched on and appears to be functioning correctly first thing in the morning when it cuts in to start the boiler before its set on cycle in order to get the house to the set temperature for the set time in my schedule.  Its all a bit of a mystery really! Do you have any other thoughts about this strange activity that might be attributable to the Nest installation (as opposed to any of the other components in the set up)? Also I'd welcome a comment about whether it is possible to have multiple schedules for different seasons? Many thanks, Peter

Hi there,

Thanks for the update. Checking your Nest Learning Thermostat Energy History might help you see what your thermostat was doing previously. You can visit this support article on how to check Energy History in the thermostat or in the Nest app. Also, please take a screenshot of it and share it with us.

Jake,

Jake,

Tried loading a screenshot but the 'thread' doesn't allow me to attach it. Anyway, I cant see anything unusual in the history, and nothing shows up at bizarre times in the morning! Would Nest history record such things? Guess it depends on whether its a Nest instruction to the boiler or one being caused by something else like a motorised valve calling for the boiler to fire up? So I'm not really getting very far with this issue unfortunately.
