as a longtime Nest customer who invested early in your smart home ecosystem with the 1st generation Nest Learning Thermostat. I recently learned that, as of October 25, 2025, Google will discontinue support for this device—including remote access, app integration, and software updates.
This decision effectively renders a still-functional product obsolete, not because of hardware failure, but due to the withdrawal of cloud services. That’s not a natural product lifecycle—it’s a deliberate tactic that undermines consumer trust and pushes users toward unnecessary upgrades.
I understand the need for innovation, but innovation should not come at the cost of planned obsolescence. Many of us adopted Nest early because it promised long-term smart functionality. Now, we’re being told that our devices will be downgraded unless we pay again.
Offering a “discounted” replacement isn’t a solution—it’s a paywall to continue using what we already own.
I urge Google to reconsider this approach. At a minimum, you should:
• Continue basic app support for legacy devices
• Offer open-source alternatives or local control options
• Provide full transparency on why these changes are necessary
If this is truly about security or infrastructure, prove it. Otherwise, it feels like a calculated move to force upgrades and boost sales.

Agreed, this is terrible support from Google

This is Google, what do you expect. They will do what ever they wish, and certainly not worry who they upset on route.
Try and contact anyone to talk to, that's a task and a half!

I have two second generation, perfectly functional thermostats and no promo code. I requested a call from Google to obtain a promo code. The “support” person requested to remotely access my email and/or my thermostat. I didn’t want to grant remote access to my private information. He argued with me as I continued to calmly ask to speak to a supervisor. I offered to give him any and all info on the thermostat that I had available - including the serial number. He ended up hanging up on me!! 😳
