Older thermostat goes offline says battery low…

My thermostat is about ten years old. It occasionally says power low and goes offline. Could it be at end of useful life? Do I need a new one?

Hi - that is a possibility but can you confirm how much power is showing for the thermostat in the Nest app (Thermostat)—> Settings (gear icon) —> Technical Info? It should always be at 3.85 V or higher for proper operation.

Do you have a C wire connection (usually a 5 wire harness) coming from the furnace/AC control board that you could connect to the Nest thermostat baseplate to give it sufficient power? Any issues you are experiencing at this time controlling your furnace/AC?

Hi folks,

Thanks for chiming in, @jb76

@TMcN12, uh-oh! If your ten-year-old thermostat is displaying frequent low power warnings and offline status, it may be nearing the end of its useful life due to electronic component degradation, potentially compromising the thermostat's performance. To check on the low power issues, gather the power readouts of your thermostat's Battery, VOC, VIN, and lIN under Settings > Technical Info > Power if you have the Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E and VIN, IIN, PS-* under Settings > Equipment, Power Info if you have the Nest Thermostat 2020. For your Nest Thermostat going offline, a few questions:

  1. How many Nest devices are offline?
  2. Has the device ever been connected to their Wi-Fi network before?
  3. Does it show offline in the Nest or Google Home app or indicated on the Nest device?
  4. Are other non-Nest devices in the home offline?
  5. Can the device find or detect other networks?
  6. Has there been any recent change in the home Wi-Fi network?
  7. Is the Wi-Fi router or access point within a reasonable range (1 to 15 meters) of between three to fifty feet from the Nest devices?

Keep us posted. We're happy to help.

Best,

Zoe
