Over heating our home

Prior to leaving on vacation, we set our Nest Thermostat to ECO mode. We had a friend check occasionally while we were away. When she came to water plants she found the room temperature was at 95F! We did have a brief power outage prior to the event that may have contributed. Our fuel bill was $500 instead of a more normal $70-$80.

What could have caused this extraordinary event? How might we prepare in the future?
