Ah! You can unlock the Nest thermostat in one of several other ways

With the Nest app
Open the Nest app and:

  1. Tap the Nest thermostat you'd like to unlock.
  2. Tap the Settings icon ⚙️ in the top right corner.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the menu and tap Unlock

With the Home app
Open the Home app and:

  1. tap the name of your Nest thermostat
  2. tap the Settings icon ⚙️
  3. Select Unlock

Note, though, that these both require that you have access to the Nest Home, and/or thermostat is linked to your account (or shared with you).

Since you just moved in, it might not even be connected to wifi though. In that case, you will need to contact nest support and follow these steps

Hi there,

@IonelaDumitr , I saw your post and wanted to chime in.

To unlock the Nest Learning Thermostat you need to connect it to a computer using a Micro USB cable and check for a  file named TechnicalInfo.PLIST. Also, you can try to contact the previous owner for the PIN.

Thanks @jtbg  and @Zouf for your help.

Regards,

Jenelyn

Having gone through a set of similar issues in the past (taking over an apartment with a bunch of “smart” devices without any info from the previous occupant), I do think the absence of a reset to factory default without the intervention of Google support is far from great.
