Sensor Names

We installed the Nest 4th gen with temp sensor and we have pair 2 to one thermostat. It’s been working great but now the sensor names have all reset to Upstairs so we can’t tell which room has which temperature. How do we reset them back to the names that were given? We didn’t change the names (on purpose) if that makes sense

Hi mdpjdp,

Thank you for posting in the community! I understand you've installed your Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) with two paired temperature sensors, and while they've been working great, their names have unexpectedly reset to "Upstairs." I'm pleased to help you get those sensor names reset back to the desired room labels so you can easily tell one more time the sensor’s name per location.

You may be able to rename your Nest Temperature Sensors directly within the Google Home app. Here's how to do it:

  1. Open the Google Home app.

  2. Tap Favorites or Devices.

  3. Scroll to find and tap on the specific temperature sensor you want to rename.

  4. Tap the Settings gear icon (usually in the top right corner).

  5. Look for an option like "Name" or "Room." (If it's "Room," you might be able to select a custom name from the list or choose "Custom" to type one in.)

  6. Enter your desired name for the sensor (e.g., "Bedroom," "Living Room," "Kid's Room").

  7. Tap Save.

  8. Repeat these steps for each sensor that needs renaming.

For any additional assistance or concerns, feel free to contact me.

Regards,

Humberto

How do I know which sensor is which though?  I had the named specific to the room they are in

Hi mdpjdp,

Thank you for sharing your question! I completely understand your concern about how to match each physical sensor to its corresponding entry in the app. I'm glad to address the specific identification step.

Here's the most effective way to identify which "Upstairs" sensor in your Google Home app corresponds to which physical sensor in your rooms:

Introduce a Temperature Change to One Sensor:

  • Go to one of the rooms where you know a sensor is located.

  • Gently pick up the sensor from its spot and hold it in your hand for a minute or two. Your body heat will cause its temperature reading to rise slightly faster than the other sensors.

  • Alternatively, you can place it near a slightly warmer or cooler spot (e.g., briefly near a window, but not in direct sunlight, or away from a vent).

Observe the Google Home app:

  • Immediately open your Google Home app.

  • Go to Favorites or Devices.

  • Look at the temperature readings for the "Upstairs" sensors. You should see one of them showing a slightly different (higher or lower) temperature than the others.

Rename the Identified Sensor:

  • Once you've identified which "Upstairs" sensor in the app corresponds to the one you're holding or influenced, tap on that specific sensor's tile.

  • Follow the renaming steps I provided previously (Settings gear icon > Name/Room > Enter desired name > Save).

Repeat for Remaining Sensors:

  • Put the first sensor back in its place.

  • Move to the next room with an unidentified sensor and repeat the process.

This method allows you to distinguish between them by observing their real-time temperature changes in the app.

Please let me know how this works for you; I thank you for the opportunity to assist you.

Regards,

Humberto
