Should Thermostat Screen indicate that stage 2 heating is currently on?

I recently had my thermostat replaced under warranty.  With the first nest learning thermostat, the screen on the thermostat would literally indicate that “Stage 2” was turned on when the system was utilizing Stage 2 Heating.

But on my second nest learning thermostat with the latest software update, the screen on the thermostat only indicates “Heating,” and not once all winter has the screen indicated that “Stage 2” was being utilized.  Is this normal?  Was this change made with the latest software update?

Hello Mike7641,

It sounds like you've noticed a change in the way your Nest Learning Thermostats display information about the heating stages. I'd be happy to shed some light on the situation here!

The shift from displaying "Stage 2" to simply indicating "Heating" might indeed be due to a temperature change. The Nest Thermostats use their Time-To Temperature algorithms to estimate how long it will take to warm or cool your home to a specific temperature. If your system has more than one stage of heating or cooling, this estimate helps your thermostat know when to turn on different stages to reach the target temperature efficiently and on time.

If your system’s first stage of heating or cooling doesn’t reach your desired temperature in a reasonable amount of time, your Nest thermostat will turn on additional stages of heating or cooling to ensure that you’re kept comfortable.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Best regards,
Mark

Thank you very much for your response.  Our heating company came and they thought it was just due to an update in the software.  Thanks though for your time and help!
