The temp is lower than the desired temp but the temp didn't go up

My Nest thermostat has some issues this week:

1. The desired temp is 22, but the indoor temp is 19.5. The circle shows heating, but no heat comes out. The thermostat has a pause icon, but the temperature didn't change after I manually changed it.

The filter was changed a month ago, and I checked to make sure it was still clean. The issue went away after I restarted the device.

2. Since then, I have noticed that the Nest thermostat stays on "orange heating" mode, but the temperature hasn't changed or is already at the desired temperature. Sometimes, when it shows "heating," the furnace is not running. I feel the thermostat is not reliable now.

It sounds like your Nest thermostat is experiencing communication or control issues with your heating system. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve it:

  1. Check Power & Battery Levels – Go to Settings > Technical Info > Power and check the battery voltage. If it's low, the thermostat might not be receiving enough power. Consider using a C-wire or a Nest Power Connector if needed.

  2. Restart & Reset Thermostat – Since restarting temporarily resolved the issue, try a full reset if the problem persists. Go to Settings > Reset > Restart. If necessary, perform a factory reset (Settings > Reset > Factory Reset), but note that you'll need to set up the thermostat again.

  3. Verify Furnace Connection – If the Nest shows heating mode but the furnace isn’t running, it may not be sending the correct signals. Try turning the heat off and on manually from the thermostat or Nest app to check if the furnace responds.

  4. Inspect Wiring – Ensure the wires are properly connected in the thermostat’s base. Loose wires can cause intermittent issues. Take a picture before making any adjustments.

  5. Check Nest Compatibility – If you recently changed your HVAC system or settings, confirm that the Nest thermostat is compatible and correctly configured for your system type.

  6. Test with a Higher Temperature – Set the thermostat to a much higher temperature to see if the furnace activates properly.

  7. Update Firmware – Make sure your Nest thermostat is running the latest software version (Settings > Version).

Hi @AndreaChang,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest community. I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Thermostat is not heating and the temperature is lower than the one you desire, but there's no need to worry; I'm happy to help you right now.

Thank you for your response, @jerry_Tomson.

I'd like to ask you a few questions in order to gather more information about the concern and find the best way to fix the problem with the Nest Thermostat.

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • When was the Nest Thermostat installed?
  • What type of HVAC system do you have?
  • Are all the wires of your thermostat seated firmly in its terminals (with no loose or exposed wires)?
  • When did the heating last work?
  • Can you please send me a picture of the Nest Thermostat wiring?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Best regards,

Gabriela

Thanks for replying. The Nest Thermostat was installed in October 2023. It still does not work properly after I reset it. I have changed to a new one and heat can work again.
