Thermostat not fully set up in Google Home app

Hi all,

another day, another issue to solve at home... Hope someone came across this already and/or knows how to deal with it.

We have two 4th Gen Nest Thermostats (one wired, one not). When we bought them we set them up in the Nest app in which they still show up.

At some point they also showed up in the Google Home app where the other devices (doorbell, cameras, smoke detectors, etc.) are set up.

Last Sunday, the wired thermostat was no longer accessible on Google Home. It still showed up, but when I selected it, it said "The Thermostat was not fully set up" and I was advised to remove it and set it up again. It is still in my Nest app though.

When I removed it from Google Home, I tried to set it up again but the app crashes/cannot connect to it.

Is this an issue because of me still having the Nest app / should I consolidate all devices on Google Home and if so what is the most efficient way to do so?

Sorry I got a bit lost with the overlap of Nest and Google Home but didn't want to lose/have to set up everything new if I deleted the Nest app/deleted the devices (smoke detectors and thermostats) from the Nest app...

Any input highly welcome!

Hi @Dominic,

Thanks for posting in this community! I understand that you have two Nest Learning Thermostats (4th gen) that you set up in the Nest app, and they show up in the Google Home app, but for some reason, you were getting the message "The Thermostat was not fully set up" in the Google Home app. However, it continues to appear in the Nest app, and this can be confusing and even a bit unsettling, but don't worry about what's happening—I'm here to help!

That advice you received about removing it from the Google Home app and trying to add it again is very good, and it's great that you followed those instructions. But at this point, to give you more information about what's happening with these devices, I'd like to ask you a few questions.

  • Could you send me a photo of how these thermostats appear in the Nest app?
  • Could you send me a photo of the two Nest Learning Thermostats (4th gen) that you have in your house?
  • When you said "We have two 4th Gen Nest Thermostats (one wired, one not)," what were you trying to say?

Regarding what happened with these thermostats and being able to set them up, it's important to know that the Google Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) can only be set up in the Google Home app, in comparison to the Nest Learning Thermostat (1st, 2nd and 3rd gen) and all Nest Thermostat E that can be set up in the Nest app.

Considering this, it's not necessary for you to delete the Google Home and Nest apps, because you don't need to configure all your devices again in either of the mentioned apps.

Hi EdouardoN,

thanks for your reply. I must have made a mistake, I have 3rd Gen Thermostats indeed and not 4th Gen.

the non-wired is still in my Google Home app (and works) but the wired one is now removed but I can’t add it. Both are still in the Nest app.

unfortunately I can’t share the pics right now.

Hi @Dominic,

Thanks for clarifying the Nest Learning Thermostat model. According to the information we have for the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen), since it's wired and you've already removed it from the Google Home app, it's necessary to also remove the device from the Nest app and perform a factory reset.

After that, you'll need to re-add the device in the Nest app. Once you complete this step, the thermostat should appear in the Google Home app.

Keep me posted.

Best regards,
Eduardo
