Thermostat switching on by itself

My thermostat is usually switched off until I turn it on and schedule for heating or cooling. Today evening for the first time the thermostat switched on by itself though it is not on any schedule. I had switched on the heat around 40 minutes prior to that and then switched off the thermostat after the set temperature was achieved. But the thermostat switched on the heat by itself again though the app showed it was 'off'.. Had to manually switch off the thermostat. After 10 minutes, same thing repeated with the app showing it was off but the thermostat was on and so was the heat.. Tried resetting the thermostat. But it repeated again after 10 minutes. Currently have set the temperature much lower and left the thermostat on. But why is this happening? My thermostat has never switched on by itself before without us using the app or manually switching it on.
